Base Under Seige

"What's going on?" Taro shouted.

"It's the alarm," Michio said. "They know you're here."

"We have to get out of here," Taro said.

"No."

"What do you mean? I'm came here to save you not get caught!" Taro said, feeling panicked.

"My mission is not complete. We have to get the flash drive."

"A flash drive?"

"Yes. It's in a computer lab on the main level. It contains some vital information. I'm not leaving here without it."

"You're not in any condition right now to be worrying about your mission. We must leave!"

Taro grabbed Michio on the arm. He turned around and swatted Taro's hand away.

"No!" Michio said. "Either we get that flash drive, or I'll get it on my own."

Taro stared at Michio harder than he ever had. Michio stared right back and their eyes were connected as if having some kind of telekinetic conversation. After a few intense moments, Taro finally let out a sigh.

"Let's get this flash drive and get out," Taro said.

Guards could be heard storming down the hallways, their heavy boots clapping against the ground.

Taro handed Michio a small bag. "Here, this has tools in it. I prepared it in case I found you."

Michio nodded and the two of them took cover behind the doorway.

The guards were lined up down the hall now and slowly advancing on the doorway. Taro pulled out a small mirror and used it to look around the corner and then tossed it to Michio who did the same. They nodded at one another and then Taro reached into his pack, pulled out a small grenade and tossed it down the hall.

A bang and a flash went off down the hall, followed by a cloud of smoke. Both of them immediately shifted into the doorway crouching low and hurling kunai at guards they had targeted.

Shouts of confusion and pain erupted from the smoke and a few gun shots ricocheted off the ceiling and walls. Taro pulled out his ninjato, and Michio pulled out a kusarigama chain and sickle.

The two of them advanced through the smoke, slashing at nearby guards as they did. Taro could feel his sword biting into flesh. The thought of it made his stomach turn, but he knew they had to keep going.

"There's a latter down the hall," Michio said pointing the way.

Michio Found

Taro looked around to both sides. There was nobody there. He made his way down the hallway and looked around the corner. At the end of the hall was a guard sitting in a chair, and behind him was a heavy metal door.

The guard was lumped over in the chair with his arms folded and his head tilted back. He was fast asleep!

Michio must be behind that door. He had to get past this guard and he would find him. But he couldn't take any chances.

Taro reached into his bag and pulled out a small bamboo tube and a feathered dart. It was lined with a chemical that would cause a man to go into a deep sleep for several hours.

Taro loaded the dart and put the tube up to his lips. Then with a quick burst of air, the dart flew through the air and into the sleeping guard's neck.

The man was instantly roused, clasping his neck with his hands and let out a great yelp.

"What the hell?" he said, clambering to his feet. The man took a few steps and then tumbled to the ground.

Taro ran over to the man and started searching his body. He found what he was looking for, a ring of keys on the man's belt. He turned the man over and unfastened his belt, sliding the keys off in the process. And then he quickly made his way to the door and started trying different keys.

After a few tries, one of the keys slid right in, and with a satisfying click, the door was open.

Taro hurried inside the dark room and waited for his eyes to focus on a dark figure in the middle of the room. There, tied to a chair, was Michio!

"Michio!" he shouted. "Michio, wake up!"

He shook the lifeless body but there was no response.

"Michio, get up!" He slapped Michio's face but he still didn't move.

Taro reached in his bag and pulled out a small bottle. He opened it up and was immediately taken over by the strong order that came out. He put the bottle under Michio's nose and began slapping him on the cheek.

"Michio, can you hear me?"

"Ugh..." the lifeless form grunted.

Michio looked up at Taro, his face battered and bruised, and there was dried blood on this side of his face.

"Taro?" Michio said.

"Yes, Michio. It's me. Thank God you're alright! We need to get out of here."

"Taro, you shouldn't have come."

"I'm here to save you Michio. Let's go."

Taro put away the small bottle and took out a kunai knife. He sliced through the ropes that were holding Michio, and Michio fell forward unable to hold himself up. Taro caught him and helped him to his feet.

"Michio, can you stand?" Taro asked.

"I think so."

Michio took a few steps forward but began to fall again. Taro went to hold him up again, but Michio waved him off and regained his stability.

"I'll be fine, Taro. I just need a minute."

Just then, an alarm sounded.

Tussle With the Guards

Taro pushed forward, knowing that he didn't have any time to waste. He turned around and headed back through the vents, taking a turn at the where it forked. He soon came to another vent, this one overlooking a large room full of crates that looked like they were ready for shipment. Down below, he could see several armed men who were loading guns into a few open crates and one who was stacking the boxes using a fork lift. There was a walkway going across the room connecting the hallway to a walkway on the other side. There was an elevator there.

Taro kept moving forward to the other side of the warehouse. The vents branched off again in two directions, and he headed down the left path toward another grid. Peering down through it, he could see the elevator close by. He put his ear down against the grid and listened to see if anyone was coming, but he didn't hear anyone.

He pulled out a kunai knife and began undoing the screws that held it in placed. Then, sliding it to the side, he stopped and listened once more for any guards. Silence.

He scooted himself forward and slipped out of the vent, landing as silent as possible and the hugged the wall to stay out of site. He pushed the button on the elevator and waited.

Each passing second felt like an eternity, knowing that at any minute he could be caught. The elevator hummed as it came to the top and opened up.

Taro slipped in. As the doors closed, he immediately began working at the emergency escape hatch at the top. A few strong jabs with his ninjato sword and it popped open, and using the hilt of the sword for leverage, he climbed up on top and waited patiently to make sure he hadn't been followed.

Sure enough, the elevator door closed and it went back up to the main level. Two guards came in talking loudly. The elevator started going back down.

"I'm sure I saw someone get in here," one guard said to the other.

Taro leaped down with his sword which was still sheathed, landing it on top of one of the unsuspecting guards' heads. The other one was quick to react, reaching for his automatic rifle, but not quick enough. Taro redirected his sword hilt at the other guard's temple and striking a clean blow.

The elevator doors opened as the guard hit the ground. Standing over the two unconscious bodies, he peered around the corner to see if the coast was clear.
