The Master's True Intetions

Taro kept his blade ready. He kept his gaze locked on his fallen sensei. He now understood that this was just another training exercise, but his sensei had never praised him before, and he was certain that it was some kind of trick.

Throughout his training, Taro had been tricked many times before. His sensei would often test Taro’s abilities; the hardest tests were always tests of the mind. Even when his sensei seemed injured, it only turned out to be a trap that Taro would walk right into. Not this time! Taro was determined to win this battle completely.

“Master Komatsu, ‘Never become attached to your enemy’, isn’t that what you always used to say?” Taro asked. “You taught me that the bond between two people was the strongest weapon a ninja could use against his opponent. You’ve tricked me before, but this time, I will not let my guard down. Admit defeat!”

Master Komatsu didn’t seem at all shaken by Taro’s declaration, which made the young ninja even more uneasy. He knew for sure that the ninja master was up to some trick, but he couldn’t seem to read him at all.

“Very wise indeed,” Master Komatsu confirmed. “After all this time, some of my teaching has finally begun to sink in. But since you seem to be serious, then I suppose I will get serious, too.”

Master Komatsu staggered up to his feet and calmly began walking towards Taro who was still holding a strong defensive stance.

“What kind of trick are you trying to pull?” Taro asked. Now that he was looking directly at his master, he didn’t feel so sure of himself. He took a few steps back,  but Master Komatsu kept his steady pace towards him.

“It is time that you truly appreciate your training,” Master Komatsu said calmly. “You must now move forward and begin your first mission as a real ninja.”

Taro’s concern was growing more and more with each approaching step. He knew he shouldn’t let his guard down, but part of him truly wanted to believe what his master was saying. After all, he had been training for years and had never even known life outside of his clan. He had grown to the age where most ninja set out and begin completing their first mission. Never the less, doubt flooded the back of his mind, telling him over and over that now was not his time, that he wasn’t ready to be a real ninja yet.

He kept fighting back his doubts, firmly holding his ground against his master’s advances. He wasn’t sure what he should do. If his master was being serious and he struck at him, he might face severe punishment. Then again, this could be the final test. This could be the test to see if he was ready to move forward in his training, and if he failed it, he may not get another chance for a long time. He had to take a chance. There was no other answer.

Before Taro could think it, his knife hand was already thrusting forward. His legs followed the attack and his arm aimed the blow straight for Master Komatsu’s gut. The blow seemed to be a success, but he was still so surprised that he hadn’t realized the counter attack his master had already begun. Just before the moment of impact, Master Komatsu moved sideways away from the blow and with a quick pivot on his back leg, delivered a devastating blow with is knee to Taro’s side. Taro felt all his air rush out of him, followed by a surge of pain that started from his damaged kidney and spread like a rapid virus throughout his body.

“You will never beat me,” he heard.

Everything went black.

What is a Ninja?

There is a lot of misconception about what a ninja is.

A ninja is a weapon. A ninja is a warrior.

First appearing in writing as early as 4th century according to some history, though it is hard to place the beginning of the ninja, and most scholars agree that they emerged around the 7th-10th century. According to most Asian historians, the ninja first developed in opposition to the elite samurai during the Heian Dynasty (794-1185).

By the 15th century, the role of the ninja was primarily hired mercenary or espionage. By this time, there was already boundless myths about ninjas, calling them demons and giving them mystical powers which were widely believed to be true, but in all reality, ninjas were very trained in silence and stealth and could easily hide or slip away quickly and unnoticed in a way that would lead others to believe they were magical.

Our story presupposes a modern Japanese society where ninjas have managed to survive and continue traditional methods of teaching and hired by clients and used as weapons and tools of espionage and mercenary. Taro is one such ninja, growing up in a civilization of ninjas long-thought to be extinct. But when Taro begins his first ninja mission, his whole world gets turned upside down.
