The First Day Continued

The bell rang. Out of his element, Taro had to calm himself down. He took a deep breath and let it out with a sigh. He was just going to have to face this challenge with the vigor instilled in him in all of his ninja training. Even if this wasn't what he was trained to do, he couldn't fail his mission and bring dishonor to his clan.

He calmly walked into the building and found the door marked F - 5. He was surprised as he slid the door open to be greeted by a welcome smile from an older man. The man, casually wearing a business suite, as if after a hard days work, and  having glasses hanging at the end of his nose, threw up his hands at the sight of Taro and let out a big welcome.

"Come on in!" he bellowed. "You must be Taro."

Before Taro could even reply the man had jumped to his feet and began showing him in.

"Everybody, this is our new student. Now don't be shy, introduce yourself!" he continued with the utmost enthusiasm.

Taro stood before a room of curious eyes. All dressed in matching uniforms, Taro felt like he was being visually accosted by an army of clones.

"Hi, I'm Taro."

"Very good!" said the teacher without a moment of hesitation. "You're seat is back there."

Taro took the empty seat in the back of the room as the teacher went straight into his lecture about Japanese history. Taro was too riled up, however, to really pay attention to what was being taught.

It felt as though his new mission was going a lot worse than he anticipated. Already he felt like he stood out too much. It was a ninja's job to assimilate himself with those around him and to seem as ordinary and non-particular as possible. Yet, he had already ran away from a group of students after kicking a ball over the fence, showed up to class late, and even worse, he was a new student, making him a prime target for observation.

Then it hit him, he needed to find his target!

Taro finally made it to his first class. How is he going to do in the classroom? How is he going to go about gathering information on his target? And we still don't know why he was given this mission in the first place! Let me know what you think in the comment sections and find out more on the next exciting chapter of Taro's Ninja Spy High school.

  1. So wait!

In Japan, does the A, B, C, etc class doors have anything to do with intelligence or age? Cuz I was never sure if A doors meant you were a senior or smart or whatever, while an F door would mean you're a freshie/stupid or whatever. Or am I totally inventing this---are doors just doors that happen to have letters?

Pretty recently I saw a ninja teen fiction book. I was like, "And Koi said it was an under-printed genre!!!!" (I don't remember what it was called. Uhh, just walk down the aisle of new teen fiction, look for a shiny hardcover book with a ninja on the front, and you're good?)

What is a Ninja?

There is a lot of misconception about what a ninja is.

A ninja is a weapon. A ninja is a warrior.

First appearing in writing as early as 4th century according to some history, though it is hard to place the beginning of the ninja, and most scholars agree that they emerged around the 7th-10th century. According to most Asian historians, the ninja first developed in opposition to the elite samurai during the Heian Dynasty (794-1185).

By the 15th century, the role of the ninja was primarily hired mercenary or espionage. By this time, there was already boundless myths about ninjas, calling them demons and giving them mystical powers which were widely believed to be true, but in all reality, ninjas were very trained in silence and stealth and could easily hide or slip away quickly and unnoticed in a way that would lead others to believe they were magical.

Our story presupposes a modern Japanese society where ninjas have managed to survive and continue traditional methods of teaching and hired by clients and used as weapons and tools of espionage and mercenary. Taro is one such ninja, growing up in a civilization of ninjas long-thought to be extinct. But when Taro begins his first ninja mission, his whole world gets turned upside down.
