Family Connections

The next couple of days went by pretty smoothly. Aimoto wasn't mad at all when he awoke from their battle only minutes later, and in fact, the fight actually caused Taro and Aimoto to become closer to one another, something that Taro thought was actually a good thing in his case which would allow him to gather better information on Aimoto. As a matter of fact, Master Komatsu was very impressed with a few of Taro's latest reports and was surprised at some of the details that Taro was learning.

Taro had spent every lunch with Aimoto since then, and now the two loners seemed like close friends who had known each other a long time. Both of them felt a mutual bond  which was developed through their fighting. In the evenings, they would go to the dojo together and practice techniques and improve their skills as fighters.

Taro had learned quite a lot about Aimoto in the past couple days. He learned that Aimoto rarely saw his father and that his mother had past away when he was young. He learned that Aimoto preferred reading history to reading fantasy. And he learned that Aimoto originally learned martial arts from his father who was now too tied up in his company to pay any attention to Aimoto at all.

Taro could empathize with Aimoto's situation, as he had never known his parents either. In his clan,  there were certainly parents and children, but as soon as a ninja reaches the age of four, he is taken from his parents and put under the guardianship of his master who teaches and trains the young child to be a perfect machine, nothing more than a tool. The clan is a ninja's family. His master is his only parent. He is to live and die in the way of the ninja. He is to live and die for the clan.

"What about your parents?" asked Aimoto one day.

"What do you mean?" Taro said looking confused.

"What are they like?"

Taro had never really thought that this was something that would ever come up, but he had dreamed of knowing his parents for most of his life, of what it was like to be loved and cared for rather than pushed and trained all the time. He told Aimoto a story half-way between his dreams and his reality. He told him that his parents were taken from him at a young age, killed in a car accident, and he was forced to live with his grandparents who were always very hard on him. He told him about how they were always concerned with his future career and didn't seem to care at all about his own feelings.

"'All for the good of the family,' the would say," he finished the story with.

And the two boys just laughed, both feeling too much truth in those words.

Well, it looks like Taro is getting very close to Aimoto. Certainly, Master Komatsu wouldn't approve of this at all, but what he knows can't hurt him, right? Tell me what you think in the comment section below and find out more of the story in the next exciting chapter of Taro's Ninja Spy High School!

What is a Ninja?

There is a lot of misconception about what a ninja is.

A ninja is a weapon. A ninja is a warrior.

First appearing in writing as early as 4th century according to some history, though it is hard to place the beginning of the ninja, and most scholars agree that they emerged around the 7th-10th century. According to most Asian historians, the ninja first developed in opposition to the elite samurai during the Heian Dynasty (794-1185).

By the 15th century, the role of the ninja was primarily hired mercenary or espionage. By this time, there was already boundless myths about ninjas, calling them demons and giving them mystical powers which were widely believed to be true, but in all reality, ninjas were very trained in silence and stealth and could easily hide or slip away quickly and unnoticed in a way that would lead others to believe they were magical.

Our story presupposes a modern Japanese society where ninjas have managed to survive and continue traditional methods of teaching and hired by clients and used as weapons and tools of espionage and mercenary. Taro is one such ninja, growing up in a civilization of ninjas long-thought to be extinct. But when Taro begins his first ninja mission, his whole world gets turned upside down.
