Late Night Espionage

Taro crept forward behind Aimoto paying close attention to him movements. In the open streets it was difficult to hide, but the darkness of the night would give him adequate cover if he needed to hide.

Taro was wearing street close as to not arouse suspicion. He carried a small book bag to give off the impression that he was a common student, but inside he had everything he needed for espionage.

Aimoto walked forward at a steady pace, not looking around at all. He advanced confidently, seemingly unaware that he was being followed at all.

They passed several older houses that looked fairly expensive, filled with tall trees in full bloom and trickling waterfalls which only help to distract his target from checking behind him.

Then they came upon another large house. It stood out as being the only house that was fully fenced in. The white brick walls also contrasted the older wooden gates that were built around the ones they passed. Aimoto stopped at the gate and was promptly shown in by a guard at the front.

Meanwhile, Taro sat behind cover and watched him go through. When the coast was clear, he began climbing a nearby tree to get a better look. The wall was tall, and there were several security cameras scouting out the area. The building was in the center of an enormous lawn with trees only on the outside near the wall. His house was large and had the appearance of an old Japanese castle but was surrounded with several lights that pointed outward in different directions.

From where he was, Taro spotted several guards keeping post around the building. The building was heavily guarded and looked difficult to sneak into.

What did it mean? Taro was beginning to understand what the purpose of his mission was. It was clear to him that whatever interest there was in Aimoto was connected to whatever secrets were locked up in that house.

  2. It won't let me add the blog, i mean, it doesn't have a follow button at the top?

  3. Also, i think it would be great if you had a character reference page. Just a page where you list the characters and who they are for new readers.

You have one little typo here. I believe "close" should be clothes. Also, I was wondering, what time period and area is this story specifically set in?

  5. @Amanda

The story is set in modern-day Japan. The supposition that the story makes is that somewhere, in some underground network, ninjas somehow managed to survive throughout the ages and are still active today.

Though my next story will probably be set in a more feudal setting during the era where ninjas were historically most active (which I believe is perhaps in the 10th century?--though I'll have to go back to my research to find out for sure).

What is a Ninja?

There is a lot of misconception about what a ninja is.

A ninja is a weapon. A ninja is a warrior.

First appearing in writing as early as 4th century according to some history, though it is hard to place the beginning of the ninja, and most scholars agree that they emerged around the 7th-10th century. According to most Asian historians, the ninja first developed in opposition to the elite samurai during the Heian Dynasty (794-1185).

By the 15th century, the role of the ninja was primarily hired mercenary or espionage. By this time, there was already boundless myths about ninjas, calling them demons and giving them mystical powers which were widely believed to be true, but in all reality, ninjas were very trained in silence and stealth and could easily hide or slip away quickly and unnoticed in a way that would lead others to believe they were magical.

Our story presupposes a modern Japanese society where ninjas have managed to survive and continue traditional methods of teaching and hired by clients and used as weapons and tools of espionage and mercenary. Taro is one such ninja, growing up in a civilization of ninjas long-thought to be extinct. But when Taro begins his first ninja mission, his whole world gets turned upside down.
