Filing of the train with the eager crowd of passengers, Taro quickly began to notice the drastic differences between the country-side and city life. As he made his way up into the main city, the differences became even more apparent. There were flashing signs, road-side shops, and people flowing seamlessly through the streets as if they were hardly aware of their migration patterns at all.

Feeling like a small spec on an otherwise clean view through a window, Taro stood still in awe, as crowds of people made their way around him.

He hardly had time to take in these sites, however. Time was not on his side, and every minute was precious. As it was, Taro knew that he could already be too late to save Michio.

The journey to the warehouse did little to ease his culture shock. Making his way through waves of people, battling the flows of traffic, and absorbing the constant chatter that took place around him, his mind was too overwhelmed to really process where he was going. But his legs already knew, and guided by some instinct of survival, he found himself getting close. Before he knew it, the warehouse was in view.

This part of the city was very secluded. There were only a few buildings around, and most of them appeared to be for manufacturing. Nightfall was definitely the best time to strike. Until then, he would lay low and observe the building's structure from a distance.

Leaping onto the lowest branch of a near-by tree, he quickly began to scale his way to the top. Concealed by the branches, he observed the outside of the building which was guarded by two men who were undoubtedly armed. It was clear that going through the front door was not his best option.

Swinging himself onto another branch to get a different angle of the place, he scaled the building for other ways in. The building was completely sealed at ground level, but up on the second story, there were a number of large windows. That was his way in.

One window was positioned particularly close to another tree, but due to the high branches, it was going to be difficult for him to climb on it. The wall stood several feet from the tree, but it was clearly his best option for catching a rope on one of the tree's limbs.

All else was up to chance. He had no understanding of the building's layout on the inside, and he wouldn't be able to learn much more about the building's defenses from his current vantage point.

He examined his gear to make sure everything was in order. Then, having patted down his pouches and sifting through his bag, he pulled out a small ration of food and prepared to wait until the sunset.

What is a Ninja?

There is a lot of misconception about what a ninja is.

A ninja is a weapon. A ninja is a warrior.

First appearing in writing as early as 4th century according to some history, though it is hard to place the beginning of the ninja, and most scholars agree that they emerged around the 7th-10th century. According to most Asian historians, the ninja first developed in opposition to the elite samurai during the Heian Dynasty (794-1185).

By the 15th century, the role of the ninja was primarily hired mercenary or espionage. By this time, there was already boundless myths about ninjas, calling them demons and giving them mystical powers which were widely believed to be true, but in all reality, ninjas were very trained in silence and stealth and could easily hide or slip away quickly and unnoticed in a way that would lead others to believe they were magical.

Our story presupposes a modern Japanese society where ninjas have managed to survive and continue traditional methods of teaching and hired by clients and used as weapons and tools of espionage and mercenary. Taro is one such ninja, growing up in a civilization of ninjas long-thought to be extinct. But when Taro begins his first ninja mission, his whole world gets turned upside down.
